In-Person or Virtual Counseling When Family Breakup Occurs

No one ever said parenting is an easy job. It’s even harder during the separation and divorce process given the myriad of unresolved difficulties that tend to arise. It’s important for both parents to take responsibility for their own lives and the decision each parent makes. Ultimately, children pay a high price when a family breakup takes place. Sometimes, not always, a child will begin to show signs of contact refusal with one parent during the separation and/or divorce process. There are several reasons why a child refuses to have contact with a parent that does not involve parental alienation. The general term contact refusal is defined as “behavior of a child or adolescent who adamantly avoids spending time with one of the parents during or after the divorce process that cannot be considered a mental condition or disorder.” It’s important to address this issue as soon as possible.

Still in other situations, a child may show signs of mild alienation, such as expressing reluctance to visit the other parent but ultimately being fine once they go. It’s important to address this issue, too. Mild alienation can worsen over time and become unpredictable in its severity. Additionally, there may be underlying factors contributing to the child’s resistance, potentially involving the favorite parent and their communication with the child. It is crucial to have a conversation with that parent and assist them in finding more effective ways of communicating with the child to ensure that the child does not develop a negative perception of visiting the other parent. When the favored parent is reluctant to or refuses to find more effective ways of communicating with the child, then it’s important to seek help from a highly qualified therapist in parental alienation.  Dr. Kathleen Reay has a tremendous amount of experience helping children showing signs of various forms of contact refusal, including mild alienation, in high-conflict divorce situations.
